Windswept
Mixed Media Sculpture | 2024
Windswept is made using a foam armature in the same fashion as Osi. Once he was refined into shape, he was “skinned” with felt and overlaid with paper towels. The towels must be delaminated (reduced to one ply) or they look clumsy and thick. Doing this creates a softer, more natural look. The horns are paper towels with a satin sheen applied, the nose pad is a paper towel with a glossy sheen, and the eyes are plaster. The eyes were pulled from a plaster mold, painted with watercolor, and coated in acrylic. They were set using air-dry clay. The eyelashes are a full-thickness paper towel gently separated and trimmed into shape. His nasal cavities were carved out and covered with paper towels. His base is made out of a reclaimed sheet metal and driftwood railroad ties. Windswept, separated from his base, weighs less than twenty-five pounds.
