The Grey Beast

Graphite, conte, and white pencil on toned paper | 18 X 24 | 2023

In this drawing, four superimposed images of the same still life are represented. A section was chosen and drawn.
Once the first sketch was completed, the paper was turned once (1/4 turn). A different part of the still-life was chosen and sketched over the top of the preceding drawing.
I repeated this process three times, resulting in each side having a different view of the same still-life
Once the preliminary layout was complete, my goal was to blend the images into one cohesive unit. Emphasizing the
lines of the four drawings allowed me to weave them
together, creating an interesting interaction of lines, forms, and space. “The Grey Beast” has no real “top” or “bottom”
as each side has its own character. I had to choose a spot to sign, and with that in mind, remember it's a signature, not an
anchor.
