Paper sculpture | 2023
The creature that started out as a community college assignment that went off the rails. It is entirely made of paper products per the assignment guidelines. The body is a baffled cardboard armature. It is skinned with strips of drawing paper and then overlaid with Canson paper, paper towels, and tracing paper (long feathers on the back). Paper towels are used from the base of the neck to the head and on the legs and beak. The paper is dyed with a watercolor mixture. The cattails are cardboard cut and sanded to shape. The base has seven layers, alternating from chipboard to cardboard to build up the “floor” of the base, then covered with blue Canson paper. The reflection on the water is paper towels, delaminated and painstakingly cut into the desired shape. The overall weight of this piece is only about twenty pounds. It took 325 to 350 hours to complete. The important takeaway I found from this piece was that paper towels could be used as a versatile problem solver.
